BJ Spanos is the founder and principal of BJ Spanos Ink, a professional services firm that helps clients create clear, concise, credible and convincing business and marketing communications. This blog is dedicated to writers – those just getting started and those who’ve been at it for a number of years.
The goal of this blog is to share ideas about writing and the power of the written word in business communications, to rant a bit about pet peeves, to support each other as we tangle tirelessly to find just the right words and to laugh at ourselves. As a mentor at heart, BJ hopes the posts and comments from experienced writers and editors will help those less experienced sharpen their skills and not to take themselves too seriously. BJ benefited from a mentor early in her career and is grateful to Daphne Gregg for her humor and guidance. BJ also looks forward to learning from young writers and editors, especially about the effective use of electronic communication channels.
Who is BJ Spanos? BJ has extensive experience developing and implementing communications strategies and initiatives to support business goals and to build stronger business-to-business, employee and customer relationships. Her particular interest is in combining the best of traditional communications plans with effective use of electronic and web-based channels to create dynamic, interactive internal and external communications programs. She also is a skilled speechwriter and coach, and has directed the publication processes from concept to completion of 11 newsletters and magazines, 17 video and PowerPoint™ presentations, and 23 books, proceedings and annual reports.
BJ has written extensively about indoor air quality (IAQ) issues and analyzed industry trends for the past 15 years, including sustainable (green) building, construction defects, mold and risk management, productivity and IAQ, chemical and biologic indoor air pollutants, and allergies and asthma. She also has solid credentials as a medical writer and editor.
Recently, she has developed a love of dog sport (Schutzhund) photography and is dedicated to the art of Schutzhund photography as a way to promote the sport. She and her husband, Peter, created a coffee table book, The Sport of Schutzhund: A Photographic Essay, which displays in rich color 370 photographs, taken by BJ and 25 amateur and professional photographers in the US, plus a few pictures from Europe. BJ and Peter are donating the net proceeds to Schutzhund. Visit the Sport of Schutzhund website site to learn more about the book and to view the Sport of Schutzhund Photo Gallery.
BJ’s creativity is not limited to just technical information. She also is an experienced small group facilitator and offers training on how to run effective and production meetings. In addition, she has created several newsletters from initial concept to printed piece, including a monthly newsletter for St. Christopher Hellenic Orthodox Church.
She is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a bachelor of science in Journalism – Science Communications.
